How Essential Oils Support You In Your Grief Journey

Most of us have heard about all the wonderful aspects of essential oils. Type in essential oils to any search engine and you will find a plethora of information. These posts contain everything from do it yourself skin care to tips and tricks of cleaning.


Did you know that essential oils can support the physical and emotional manifestation of your grief?

Stress plays a role in many health conditions. Losing a child is one of the most stressful events a heart might endure.

Essential oils can be an amazing way to support your grief journey. I have listed some of the manifestations of grief below. This is by no means is an exhaustive list. I have also linked studies with essential oils.

Fatigue: This is the kind of fatigue that does not get better with rest. Some days it can be a real struggle to get out of bed and do necessary tasks.

Aches and Pains: Our bodies and minds are connected. The mental and emotional distress can make any underlying pain condition worse.

Headaches: Stress makes tension headaches more likely. When emotions and thoughts are bottled up this can add to the ongoing stress and tension.

Tightness in Chest and Shortness of Breath: Anxiety after child loss is real. It is a feeling of being trapped and overwhelmed. Broken heart syndrome is real. The left ventricle of the heart can actually change its shape.

Forgetfulness: Grief brain is a real thing. You are not crazy and you are not experiencing early onset of dementia. Losing things, forgetting things, getting lost in familiar places, missing appointments or inability to remember names of people are all part of grief.

Inability to Focus: Your mind becomes fuzzy and you just can't pay attention for more than a few minutes at a time. Sometimes that particular thing that you wanted to accomplish for the day just is not going to happen.

Appetite or Digestive Issues: Stress has been linked to gut problems. You may ignore emotions by over eating or just refusing to eat at all.

Lower Immune System: Stress lowers the immune system. Your body may not be able to have the energy or resources to combat a cold or a flu.


How exactly does an essential oil perform?


Essential oils contain hundreds of different phytochemicals (plant based chemicals). The molecular structure of the oils are so small it gives them the ability to penetrate cells and travel through blood and tissue. This will trigger hormonal and neurological responses that in turn effect our physiology.

At the same time essential oils can effect your mood. Simply smelling an opened bottle can calm, uplift, ground and stimulate (to name a few). Scent works directly with our brain. It is connected to our olfactory bulbs in our nasal cavity. These bulbs send messages to our limbic system. Our limbic system is considered the primitive brain. It is where memories and emotions are stored, hormones, behavior responses, mood management, food, and sex drive are influenced.

When your body is under stress, your limbic system will generally produce the same response every time. Your stress response has been developed over many years and through many different avenues. The hormones you were exposed to while you developed in utero, childhood trauma, personality and others. But once you introduce an essential oil. Your perspective will change. This can have a compounded positive effect when the molecules enter the body via absorption through the skin.
